24 Agriculture Extension Agents and 26 College Tutors have been taken through a 5 day capacity strengthening session in crop protection and Adult Learning.
The aim of the training is to create a sustainable approach of Capacity Development of Agriculture Extension Agents and Tutors who have a major role to play in strengthening the skills of agronomists and farmers for good agricultural practices for the fruit and vegetable sector in Ghana.
Participants were selected from Agriculture Colleges like Kwadaso, Ohawu, Ejura, Damango Agric College, Adidome, Asuansi and Wenchi Farm Institutes. Tutors from Kumasi Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Ho Technical University and West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI) while Agriculture Extension Agents were selected from vegetable cluster areas like Akomadan, Afrancho, Keta, Denu and Peri-Urban areas.
The training took place at GRNMA at Ejisu in the Ashanti region from March 18-22, 2019 and facilitated by personnel from Wageningen University & Research (WUR) in the Netherlands and the Agronomy team from HortiFresh.
The training sought to improve production challenges of farmers and reduce the Extension Agent to Farmer ratio. Currently, Ghana’s National ratio of Extension Agent to farmer stands at 1 Agricultural Extension Agent (AEA) to 1,500 farmers (1:1500) (MoFA).
At the end of the training, participants will be tasked to establish demonstration fields which will be used to train farmers and Agronomists for .
This training is the 2nd session of the HortiFresh Agronomy training and as part of interventions to provide technical assistance to fruit and vegetable companies.
