GhanaVeg will be commencing series of trials to help find lasting solutions to some prevailing challenges in the onion value chain. Starting with, will be trials of eight different varieties of onion. Two known varieties namely Bawku Red, Red Creole and six other hybrid varieties will be tested – Orient, BGS 329, Neptune, Sivan, Prema and Dayo. The trial will take place in three regions: Upper East, Greater Accra and Volta
The trial is in collaboration with a Research Institution and aimed at demonstrating the performance of these varieties in the regions and data collection on yield, tolerance to disease and pest conditions in the local environment and general adaptability and other parameters.
GhanaVeg will nurse its own seedlings for the project. Demo fields will be established at various farmers’ fields with a dedicated researcher to give agronomic instruction to farmers as well as monitor the cultivars.
