Enhancing Production Quality at Farm Gate through Cluster Development Support
May 15, 2020Recent development under Covid-19 has not just affected human lives but adversely affected businesses as well. The export sector has not been left out of this ordeal as exporters are faced with the challenge of reducing the volume of exports due to some lowered orders and port restrictions from recipient countries.
Managing Director of AB farms, Mr. Benjamin Agbesi, shared his experience. According to him, he exported Asian vegetables to Europe three times a week prior to Covid-19 with an average of 8 tons but the case is not the same in this period. “In these times, I have reduced my shipment to about 5 tons once a week but the cargo can only take half (2.5) of what I send to the Airport. This means I have to throw the rest away because the domestic market is not familiar with the kind of vegetables my company exports. Prices being offered for produce now have drastically reduced while the cost of air freight has increased. This is no fault of the airline but lack of passenger flights”
He mentioned that having a cold storage facility at this time will help to store left over produce that can be exported another time to reduce financial loss.
