Project Title

Improving the income of mango producers by providing biological solutions for fruit fly

The project aims to improve the income of 600 small mango producers (about 3,000 ha) in the Korhogo-Sinematiali-Ferkessedougou area of northern Côte d'Ivoire by providing biological solutions (agricultural advisory services and phytosanitary products) to control the fruit fly
  1. Train and support 600 small-scale producers to make the best use of KWA's technology to control the fruit fly in their orchards
  2. Facilitate the access of at least 600 small producers to biological control products against the fruit flies through three operational convenience stores in Korhogo, Sinematiali and Ferkessedougou
  3. Provide post-training support to farmers in the use of the biological products
  1. The orders for the production of the biological products required from Koppert B.V (7,000 tubes of SPLAT MAT ME and 6,000 liters of ANAMED S) have been launched. The receipt of the first deliveries take place in February 2019 in Abidjan, followed by their arrival in the project area (about 600 km from Abidjan). This makes it possible to have on-site products on time to implement the appropriate interventions
  2. Recruitment, capacity building and installation of a female management agent from the Korhogo convenience store. The two others for the convenience stores of Ferkessedougou and Sinématiali, will join the project team at most three months thereafter. The capacities of these three KWA agents are strengthened: IEC of the producer-customer on the basic recommendations of optimal use of biological products, systematic reference of the producer to the agronomist and to the three agricultural technicians of KWA (two agricultural technicians already are operational on the field, while the 3rd will join the team at the appropriate time)
  3. Consolidation in synergy with the mango producers and the Inter-mango platform regarding the training / supervision of producers and monitoring of the fight against the fruit fly in the field.
  4. The definition of the calendar (indicative) of application of the biological solution of the fight against the fruit fly for the campaign 2019, in synergy with the producers and the Inter-mangue platform, in particular the exporters:
    • Beginning of March 2019: start of application # 1 of SPALT MAT ME;
    • April 1, 2019: start of application # 1 of ANAMED S;
    • April 21, 2019: start of application # 2 of ANAMED S; and
    • May 1, 2019: start of application # 2 of SPLAT MAT ME.
  5. The training, support and local supervision will gradually extend in 2019 to all 600 producers and their 1,200 employees (full-time workers).
  6. Communication (IEC)/agricultural advice and the agricultural warning of research and development institutions (CNRA, CILSS) through local radio stations from March 2019.
  7. Monitoring (regular monitoring) of the implementation of the project
  8. The evaluation (qualitative and quantitative) and balance of the campaign in August 2019 with the participation of the producers and the inter-mango, in particular the exporters
  1. At least 600 lead farmers trained on the use of biological control agents
  2. Initial 600 lead farmers trained, who in turn collectively get additional 1,200 employees also trained
  3. Three convenience stores operational to create access to biological control products to farmers
  4. Monitoring visits to provide post-training and after-sales support to farmers conducted for at least six months
