GhanaVeg held a discussion sessions with various stakeholders in the Torgome Irrigation Scheme to deliberate on some challenges facing the Scheme. Among other challenges are the poor construction of the primary, secondary and tertiary canals which prevents producers within that enclave to receive adequate water to irrigate their farms. Accessibility to various farms is a major challenges during rainy seasons. The issue of cattle grazing is another challenge producers live with within the Torgome scheme.
The meeting was organised for selected experts in the Irrigation field from GCAP, MoFA, GhanaVeg partners like Vegpro, Joekopan, 3A’s, & Quin Organics, WAPCOS Ltd (Consultancy Agency), Chiefs, Opinion leaders and farmer groups. These groups of people deliberated on how to solve the various challenge the scheme faces now. A broader picture of a restructuring and repositioning of users of the scheme was brought to bear by experts from GCAP & WAPCOS Ltd. A Consultancy Agency tasked by MoFA to look at the scheme again.
Participants were put into three groups to discuss solutions, define timelines and allocate responsibilities to groups of people for the following challenges; Canals, Water Supply Systems and Schedule, Access Road and Soil Fertility Mitigation Measures and Security, Sustainability of Projects and Scheme Management.
