As part of activities in the cluster, HortiFresh organised a fair in the two communities in the onion cluster Keta/Denu in response to the cluster needs assessment for accessibility and availability of quality inputs. The cluster fair was preceded by a field day, where farmers were taken to demonstration farms to observe the process of curing onions for longer shelf life.
In total, 201 farmers and 14 companies participated in the cluster fairs and the field days in Keta and Denu. In Keta, 89 farmers were present while 112 farmers participated in Denu.
Each company (Tikola, Dizengoff Ghana; Yara Ghana Ltd; Trotro Tractor; Zero Two Ent. RMG Ghana, Meridian Seeds, PEG Ghana, Rainbow; Green Ef; Jayree Agro, Reiss & Co; Jubaili Agrotech; Chemico Ltd; The Candel Co Ltd) had 5 minutes to introduce the company and its products & services to farmers after which the exhibition opened for purchases.
Prof. Kumaga of the University of Ghana, Crop Science Department, spent 15 minutes to talk about the importance of curing onion in Keta. He focused on how curing can extend the shelf life of onions to be able to take advantage of periods of scarcity.
